Fractured peace on Richmond Street in Tottenham, more parking sought

Posted June 29, 2009

New Tecumseth councillors will confirm tonight a working plan to find a long term solution to a neighbourhood fight in Tottenham that pits Richmond Street residents against the Masonic Lodge, and its tenant, The Dance Connection.

Some immediate neighbours of the lodge building are angry over cars dropping off and picking up their children attending the Dance Connection renting space at the Masonic Lodge because they use private driveways to turn around, or park on the short street, sometimes blocking access.

The Dance Connection operates various dance classes six days per week, during the fall, winter and spring and at times, as a legally permitted use at the Lodge, which also provides the Masons with revenue to subsidize its organization.

At times over the past few years, there were reports of angry confrontations between some neighbours and dance school patrons.

The problem is a chronic shortage of public parking in Tottenham's downtown core, which Richmond Street is part of. One of the solutions would utilize private property between Mill Street and Richmond, has not materialized because of inaction from Bell Canada and Canada Post, two of the property owners preventing an unfettered flow.

Last week, after hearing from the Masonic Lodge's Ken Pratt, and a Charlie Horan of Richmond Street, councillors decided to continue pressing Canada Post and Bell Canada. In the interim improvements to street lighting on Richmond Street West, will be investigated, and the Masons have pledged to create a turning lane on their property.

A progress report is to be brought forward in the fall.
