Spring water run-off caused 'drainage failure,' township road
Posted April 9,
The thaw of winter overwhelmed a cross culvert yesterday afternoon on
Conc. 5 Adjala-Tosorontio between Hwy 89 and 30 Sideroad, washing out
the road base, forcing its closure for emergency repairs.
The Township's Public Works Superindent Jim Moss explained this morning
via email the damage was caused by "drainage failure."
"The volume of water running through this location late yesterday
afternoon at the height of the snow melt was going to make the repair
and replacement of the cross culvert at that time
extremely difficult," wrote Mr. Moss. "In the interest of public safety
I had decided to close the
road in that section overnight."
He said emergency services were notified and worked out access
scenarios for best response times if required.
"The flow of water was greatly reduced this morning and our Public
Works crew has already begun the repair work after receiving emergency
service locates for underground utilities. I expect that the
replacement and repairs should be completed around noon today," said
Mr. Moss. "The worst part was the level of water at the time and being
able to efficiently work around the water. Now that it is currently
down to a trickle this morning the repair is a very straight forward
cross culvert replacement. The Public Works crew does a number of these
replacements every year through our normal operations and maintenance."
