School board harrassment update includes workplace relationships

Posted February 10, 2014

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is adding bulk to its workplace and sexual harrassment policy by including post-break-up relationships between two employees.

SCDSB current policy states only that "Relationships between consenting adult employees which are/were voluntary and based on mutual attraction do not constitute sexual harassment."

The amended policy drafted for the board's Human Resources Standing Committee, adds "Any harassment towards a former partner may constitute sexual harassment if one party is offended or feeling harassed by the other partner post relationship. Sexual harassment can also include sexual solicitation."

Other amendments to the policy are mostly language edits, for example, the word "anyone" replaces the term "women or men" throughout the document. Additionally, it tightens up the preamble, including "Every person who is an employee has a right to freedom from harassment in the workplace by the employer or agent of the employer or by another employee," ending there, deleting "because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, record of offences, marital status, family status or disability."
