Alliston man receives Medal of Bravery

Posted December 6, 2013

An Alliston man was one of 39 receipients of the Governor General's Medal of Bravery presented at a ceremony yesterday morning at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Shawn Alexander Doyle, along with two of his co-workers, James Haden of Aurora, and Gerard Denis Robineau of Bowmanville were recognized by the Governor General for their life risking actions on Feb. 11, 2008, credited with saving the life an injured co-worker at a rail yard in Concord.

"The victim had been transferring the contents of a pressurized rail car when a valve exploded, sending a geyser of caustic sodium hydroxide several metres in all directions," according to the Governor General's citation. "After calling for help on his radio, the victim took refuge in a nearby safety shower. Unable to shut down the flow or depressurize the rail car, the three rescuers managed to reach the victim and transport him to a safer area. All four men were treated for second-degree burns to their faces and hands."
