Sign on trailer request promoting Hospice event hits timing snag

Posted June 3, 2014

Matthews House Hospice has requested permission from the Town to advertise its 3rd annual Harvest Gala Sept. 12, on the side of a tractor trailer parked on a vacant lot at King and Victoria Street in Alliston.

Community groups, not-for-profit and charitable organizations have more leeway on signage, however, the sign bylaw does include time limits including removal not later than seven days after the event, or a 60 day display period, whichever comes first.

Matthews House had the trailer set up in that location previously for several months, and also moved it to Cookstown.

To comply with the 60 day bylaw provision, the advertising would start around mid July.

"Perhaps the one thing that has changed, (since then), said Ward 4 councillor Fran Sainsbury, is "our sign bylaw has changed and we just finished doing that and it took a long time, and once we start bending those rules, we start setting precedence, and that's my concern."

The request was referred to Town staff for further details
