Balloon company says accident under investigation

Posted June 9, 2014

The hot air balloon that crashed in Alliston Saturday night belongs to Sundance Balloons, headquartered in Belmont, ON (south east of London), with a location in Barrie.

According to its web site, "Sundance Balloons has grown to be one of the world's largest operators of commercial hot air balloons, flying over 12,000 passengers each year in 12 cities across Canada. Sundance Balloons markets hot air balloon rides to individuals and groups, and to companies for use as corporate gifts and incentive rewards."

Judy McGonigle, of Sundance Balloons, told Free Press Online via email this morning that "I can confirm that there was an incident on Saturday evening near Alliston. One passenger came out of the basket, while another passenger was complaining of leg pain after a landing."

"Both were taken to hospital," added Ms. McGonigle. "It is my understanding that the passenger with leg pain was treated and released, while the other passenger was transferred to another facility. I don't have the information on where he was taken.

The safety of our passengers is our top priority. Accordingly, we have pledged our full cooperation with Transportation Safety Board officials, whom have already started their investigation. It's premature to identify a cause, but we will be taking a closer look at whether the passenger disobeyed pilot instructions regarding landing procedures."

More details when they become available.
