Councillors vote to retain tax free allowance for next term
Remuneration paid to members elected to the next term of council - 2014
to 2018 - will continue to be one-third tax free.
New Tecumseth mayor is paid a basic annual salary of $34,495, and
$4,388 in health benefits. Deputy mayor basic salary is $25,989, who
also received $4,390 in lieu of health benefits.
Ward councillors are each paid a base of $20,163 and health benefits
(or in lieu of) $4,390.
The tax free component is to recognize that "remuneration paid to
elected members is deemed as expenses incident to the discharge of
their duties as members of council or local boards."
In 2012, councillors cost New Tecumseth ratepayers $322,000 in remunerations and expenses. The 2013 tally will be provided in March 2014.
Council is required to review the tax free allowance bylaw once per
term. It passed last week as part of the consent agenda - no discussion.
