TNT Minor Hockey game reportsPosted January 7, 2012Minor Atom AA The Ken Beattie Ltd. Minor Atom AA's sponsored by Scotiabank returned from the long holiday break re-energized and hopefully ready to make a long run into the playoffs. After having some fun games versus the most highly touted teams in the province where an under manned team fared incredibly well, the team traveled to Markham to take on the hottest team in the York Simcoe loop. The pesky Markham Waxers were unbeaten in 14 leading into this game and were looking to leap to third in the standings going into the final stretch. Why the streak? What's causing the surge? In the first it was not hard to tell as the high flying home side took the man before the puck. With most of our men playing LAX in the summer, they were ready for the onslaught and actually were excited to partake. Even our tender was excited to be involved as he made some incredible saves to keep the home side scoreless. As the aggression went unnoticed, Caleb 'Quick as Lightening' Thompson slammed one home as he went to the net and finished the play. Assists from Mitchell Smilsky and Jackson Vojin. 1-0 after one. This period saw our tenacious line of Hayden Forrest, Graysen Alexander, and Michael Meszaros cycle the puck like I have never seen and keep the home side hemmed in for long periods of time. Great job boys. As the second started, the hits kept coming as the Waxers tried to intimidate the monsters from the north. On a broken play from just inside the our blueline, a give away created an opportunity and the Waxers made no mistake tying the game. Would the momentum shift? As the home side started to pressure, on a great defensive move by Smilsky, a scoring chance was taken away but "Hold the phone, Don", a penalty shot was called. Why? Not sure. You never are south of Seven. As the whistle blew, the Waxer took to the puck, he dipped, he doodled, he better have luck. On a hey-how-you-do, Scotty 'Balls' Barnett said "Well, thank you" and stacked the pads to make an incredible stop to keep the game tied. This save lit a fire under our young phenoms' belts from that point on as the home side could hardly touch the puck. Late, Late in the second, the effort finally paid off as Kyler 'K-dog' MacNeil put in a rebound with one second left. Assists by Hayden Santo and Jacob Holmes. 2-1 after two. In the third, the young twisters took it to the hosts as they were slashed, checked and tripped but loved every minute. The rougher the game the more they enjoyed it as Colin 'Incredible Shot' Ewing scored his first on the year on a blast from the blue line on a pass from Steven Mercer and Holmes. Great goal Colin. Straight in for sure. Next to take the wind out of the home sides sail was Wylie 'the Wizard' Birkett as he buried one deep on a great effort from Dalziel Kirby who was fed from Cole Turcotte. To put the icing on the cake, 'K-dog' got his second on passes from Thompson and Vojin. Great win boys. They could very well be our first and incredibly tough playoff opponent. Awesome. |
