TNT Minor Hockey playoff game reportsPosted February 27, 2013Minor Atom AA The Ken Beattie Limited Minor Atom AA's sponsored by ScotiaBank hosted the Georgina Blaze for game number three in this race to six points in a deadlock. The previous game saw Georgina play an incredibly fast game and shocked the Stars with their first playoff lose this season. Would young Phenoms bounce back and put the pressure back on the cross lake rivals? In the first, the visiting team really came out and tried to set the pace as they attacked our zone every chance they got. Late in the frame, Kyler "K-dog" MacNeil broke the goose egg on passes from Colin Ewing and Jackson Vojin to take the 1-0 lead into the second. You could tell that the late first period goal took the wind out of the visitors sails as the Tornados blew hard and fast and scored another 3 unanswered to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Goals this period from Wylie "the Wizard" Birkett with 2 and Jacob "the Howitzer" Holmes with one. Assists on great feeds from Cole Turcotte (2) Steven Mercer, Hayden Santo, Dalziel Kirby and Graysen Alexander. 4-0 after two. In the third, the team let up a little, but the Blaze started to roll. Scott "Balls" Barnett made some incredible saves on break away plays that could have really kept the Blaze in the game. Both teams traded tallies but in the end it was 5-1 great guys and a four points to two series lead. Game 4 saw the boys travel around the lake for what felt like an all nighter as they met for what would hopefully be the final game of the series. This time our boys came out flying as they were ready to punch their tickets to the semi-finals. As the boys pressure hard, they got rewarded with one as Caleb "Quickness" Thompson slammed one home on assists from Mitchell Smilsky and Ewing. After a dominating period, the score was kept at 1-0 on saves from the far end. In the second, both teams started to up their play. The first half was all TNT as "the Wizard" doubled the lead on assists from MacNeil and Hayden Forrest. Just then the momentum swung as Georgina split the lead to give the team a chance. Again, late in the period, "K-dog" MacNeil hammered one home from Birkett and Turcotte. 3-1 after two. Early in the third, the Stars struck again and made the game 4-1 on a goal by "the Wizard" Birkett from Turcotte and Michael Meszaros. This game also saw Scotty "Balls" play two of his best and busy games of the year making incredible saves and is the main reason this series ended as early as it did. If not for him, we could be wondering what ifs. Great job Balls. Not to be outdone, "K-dog" MacNeil made it 5-1 from passes by Vojin and Kirby. As our boys let up, Georgina capitalized on a couple of chances but in the end, the final was 5-3 TNT and a trip to the semi finals vs. Kingston. The team travels this weekend to Kingston to take on the Lakeshore champs on Saturday and Sunday. They will return and host the Canadians Friday and Saturday if necessary. Game times will be posted on our website http://tnthl.goalline.ca and follow our games on twitter if you can't make the trip at TNT Minor Atom AA (or @tdog9919). Good luck young Stars! |
