Town taking bids for heaters in Tottenham arena

Posted August 7, 2014

Tottenham arena, one of the coldest venues for spectators in the region's minor hockey loop, will be fitted with eight units providing "high intensity infrared radiant heating utilizing gas combustion" in the seating area.

Specifically, New Tecumseth is accepting bids for the supply and installation of the Eco Schwank 13, until 2 pm Aug. 14. Barring unforeseen developments in the tendering process, the heaters are expected to be installed no later than Sept. 30th.

"If funding is available, the Town may install additional heaters for player benches," according to provisions in the tender bid package.

Built in the early 1970s, Tottenham arena has developed into a multi-use facility including a fitness centre, programming rooms, and a year-round outdoor pad, to complement the gymnasium and community hall with kitchen facility. While the ice surface has been renovated to include new boards, temperature control has been non-existent and during the winter months, drops to below freezing. Beeton Arena suffers the same problems, which was partly alleviated by the installation of some heating units in the past few years.

This season, Tottenham arena will be home to the expansion Tottenham Steam Jr A team playing in the GMHL. Parks and Recreation's takeover of the concession operations at the facility is expected to include provisions to provide for licensed beer sales on game nights.
