Tottenham sewage plant rebuild to top $21 million

Posted September 10, 2012

The cost to build a new sewage treatment plant in Tottenham is pegged at $21.9 million, according to the conceptual level design final draft report on tonight's council agenda. That doesn't include about $2 million in contingency fees worked into the estimates.

Increasing sewage treatment capacity in Tottenham is to accommodate the construction of 1,795 draft approved residential units that will double its population to 9,280 by 2031.

The new plant is to replace the current facility on Industrial Road which has been hobbled over the years by non-compliance issues - though the Town has taken measures to mitigate those, however, its expansion is necessary to accommodate the additional growth.

Financing is proposed to be budgeted over at least four years, with the major hits starting in 2014 requiring $10.56 million and 2015 at $10.45 million. Future development charges are expected to service the debt obligation that New Tecumseth will have to take on to pay for the works.
