Town to continue policing parking at SMH

Posted August 13, 2014

New Tecumseth's bylaw enforcement department will continue to police paid parking services at Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Alliston for the next two years, and in exchange the Town keeps revenues from fines collected.

SMH, which charges a $5 flat rate for visitors parking, turned to the Town in 2009 as a pilot project to monitor and ticket offending vehicles. It was extended in 2012, and again this month through to July 31, 2016.

It remains the hospital's responsibility and cost to remove or tow vehicles from its property.

The report to council Monday night setting out the terms showed in 2013, the Town collected $1,100 in fines, and to date this year, $650, which "exceed the cost of the Town's resources to provide enforcement services creating a positive impact to the Town's operating budget."

"By-law Enforcement has confirmed that the parking fine revenue generated has been sufficient to warrant ongoing patrolling of the hospital parking lots without compromising enforcement activities throughout other areas of the Town. By-law staff have advised that daytime foot patrols take approximately thirty minutes to complete in order to check for permits when the lot is full. Night patrols are done regularly throughout the winter and day patrols are done when time permits."
