Council to confirm removal of minimum rates for water, sewer

Posted February 8, 2010

New Tecumseth councillors are scheduled tonight to adopt the draft 2010 water and wastewater budgets which will eliminate the minimum charges for residential and low volume users and replace it with a static rate for actual usage.

The changes take effect April 1, and include the following:

  • All residential volumes at a rate of $1.54 per cubic meter (P/CM).
  • Industrial Block users (i.e. Honda) that use over 30,000 cubic meters per year shall pay a water charge of $1.13 P/CM.
  • Baxter Corporation shall pay a water charge of 85 cents P/CM.
  • All consumers with average consumption under 200 P/CM per month will be billed quarterly.
  • All consumers with average consumption over 200 P/CM per month will be billed monthly.
  • A minimum of 14 calendar days shall be given to the consumer prior to the due date for the bill to be paid and the day that the bill is mailed to the consumer shall constitute the commencement of this period.
The Town estimates at least 1,200 customers in New Tecumseth have been paying only the minimum rates because they consume less than the allowable 30 cubic meters of water per month, quarterly, before an additional charge kicks in. One cubic meter equals 264 US gallons.
