Wilson renews call for 'fair' hospice funding

Posted May 21, 2014

Simcoe Grey MPP Jim Wilson brought his reelection campaign to Alliston this morning, stopping off at Matthews House Hospice in Kingsmere "to reaffirm my commitment for fair hospice funding across the province."

Mr. Wilson questioned why one LHIN is funding 21 beds when another LHIN is only funding three.

Matthews House Hospice operates its day program from its original location on Hwy 89 in Essa across from the Nottawasaga Inn, and also now operates two beds at rental homes in the Kingsmere development at King and Industrial Parkway in Alliston. It receives less than $40,000 in annual funding from the Ministry of Health. In February the organization announced it planned to build a 10-bed hospice at 131 Wellington St. E, at an estimated cost of $4 million.

"The government needs to develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure that people in both the north and south ends of my riding receive the same access to services as people in the rest of Ontario," said Mr. Wilson this morning. "This is an issue I have been fighting in the Ontario Legislature for years without the Liberals doing anything. Their negligence is appalling."
