8th Ave centre reopens with more space for youth

Posted July 10, 2012

The renovations are complete, new equipment moved in, and capacity doubled as the Alliston Community Youth Centre (ACYC) prepares to reopen this Thursday to serve local youth 9-15 years of age.

Located at 161 8th Ave (across from Ernest Cumberland Public School), and operated by the The Alliston Community Policing Committee (ACPC), the centre has been closed for the past few weeks for the upgrades.

The ACYC is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm and  provides various programs organized by its Youth Coordinator, Jenny Vienneau, supported by student and adult volunteers. and welcomes youth 9-15 years of age.

Patricia Middlebrook, president of the ACPC, wrote via email that the YMCA no longer uses the centre for its before and after school programs, so that freed up space which has allowed them to increase capacity from 28 persons to 56. It is air conditioned, and includes a pool table, ping pong table.

"Donations from some of our sponsors has allowed us to provide a projector, screen and Wii system, new tables and chairs, shelving, etc." explained Ms. Middlebrook. "The entire building has been repainted and some of the flooring has been replaced. It is a wonderful place for youth 9-15 years of age to meet and socialize."
