'Bird flu' detected in dead goose in Tottenham pond

Posted December 22, 2025

Avian Influenza has been determined to have killed a goose found at the pond in the Tottenham Conservation Area, last week, according to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC).

Avian influenza (AI), often called "bird flu," is caused by the Type "A" influenza virus. This virus can affect several species of food-producing birds (chickens, turkeys, quails, guinea fowl, etc.), as well as pet and wild birds.

"The Town is working closely with CWHC to monitor the affected area," according to a notice issued this morning. "Residents are strongly advised to avoid ponds and waterfowl habitats at this time."

While the risk of transmission to the general public is considered low, the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends the following precautions:

  • Do not handle sick or dead wild birds or other wildlife

  • Keep pets away from sick or dead wildlife and ensure dogs are leashed

  • Keep cats indoors

  • Do not feed or interact with waterfowl

  • Do not feed pets raw meat from game birds or poultry

  • Restrict pet birds to indoors if they are normally kept outside

  • Remove bird feeders

If you encounter sick or dead wildlife, do not touch them. Report sightings and obtain more information by contacting the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781 or by visiting cwhc-rcsf.ca
