Gibson Transport owner secures federal government loan

Posted June 3, 2026

The Quebec based parent company of Gibson Transport in Alliston, has secured a $90 million loan through the federal government's Enterprise Tariff Loan facility.

C.A.T. North America Inc. (C.A.T.) headquartered in Vaudreuil-Dorion, purchased Gibson in 2023. The company specializes in long-haul trucking, intermodal services, warehousing, distribution, and cross-border freight management services. It currently employs 1,670 workers in Canada and has a fleet of over 1,500 power units and 5,000 trailers, serving customers in manufacturing, industrial, and retail sectors.

In March 2025, the government announced the creation of the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan (LETL) facility, a $10 billion financing facility managed by Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation, a subsidiary of Canada Development Investment Corporation, to support Canadian companies affected by actual or potential tariffs and countermeasures.

"This financial assistance will help one of Canada’s major transportation and logistics employers maintain operations, protect Canadian jobs, and preserve critical transportation capacity, ensuring continued reliability in supply chains," according to the press release.

"Disruptive trade patterns are reshaping Canada’s transportation and logistics sector by altering freight volumes, re-routing supply chains, and increasing operational complexity. These changes are raising costs, reducing efficiency, and forcing logistics providers to adapt quickly to fluctuating demand and evolving cross‑border trade conditions."

Gibson Transport has been impacted on several fronts as Honda Canada's main by-road transportation mode. In addition to slowing movement of car parts between countries, it has to absorb the loss of future business from Honda's indefinite suspension of its $15 billion expansion in Alliston.

"Transportation and logistics companies play a critical role in Canada’s economy by enabling the efficient movement of goods across provinces and international borders. Companies like C.A.T. support trade, ensure supply chain reliability, and help businesses remain competitive in both domestic and global markets."
