Base Borden security level currently unaffected by war in Iran

Posted March 9, 2026

Canada's non-involvement in the American war with Iran is keeping CFB Borden's security posture unchanged for now, meaning it's business as usual for non-military people accessing the base north of Alliston.

The base is the largest training establishment in the CAF and is home to a variety of other military and Defence Team organizations. On average, CFB Borden trains 20,000 military personnel annually. It also employs approximately 3,250 military members and 1,500 civilians. CFB Borden comprises an approximately 12 km² (3,000 acres) training base and a 69 km² (17,000 acres) training area.

Borden's recreation centre and indoor swimming pool are available via memberships to the public. But Captain Kyle Donnelly, Public Affairs Officer, Canadian Forces Base Borden, told Free Press Online, the base is not intended to be used as a general traffic route between Alliston and Angus, and are discouraged from doing so.

"Individuals who have a legitimate reason to visit the base, including employees, residents, family members, and approved facility users such as gym members, may continue to access the site as usual," said Captain Donnelly. "As part of routine security practices, anyone entering the base may be asked to present valid identification. In situations where identification cannot be provided, access may be declined by Security Staff or Military Police."

The last time Borden was on heightened alert was after the 9/11 events as Canada was part of the NATO forces joining the American war in Afghanistan.
