Town sets up 'virtual open house' for planned Church Street improvements
Posted January 12, 2026
New Tecumseth's engineering department is accepting public comments until January 23 for views on the estimated $17 million road and bridge improvements along Church Street North, between Victoria Street and Hussey Street in Alliston.
The largest component, which will impact traffic and pedestrian movement for approximately 18 months, includes replacement of the Cunningham Bridge over the Boyne River on Church St. This structure has been identified as priority #2, considered to be in poor condition as part of the Town's 2024 Municipal Structure Inventory and Inspection Report.
Additionally, the extension of the Merlyn Duffin Walkway along the Boyne River is being considered as part of this project.
Other parts of the overall project is planned to include:
-
Urbanize the road cross-section, eliminate roadside ditches and ensure the proper conveyance of stormwater flows
-
Improve the condition of existing infrastructure (watermain, sanitary sewer);
-
Replace and widen the bridge;
-
Improve traffic operations on Church Street North;
-
Install bike lanes;
-
Church Street North from Victoria Street to north of Hussey Street ... address structural road deficiencies; and
-
The watermain replacement along Church Street North;
The Church Street works, and the Boyne River Trail extension are covered by development charges, which would finance most of the anticipated $12.8 million in long term debentures.
Estimated project timelines put starting date this summer, with completion expected late 2027.
