Simcoe County council composition bylaw now moving through municipal level

Posted May 12, 2025

The second leg of the triple majority needed to chop Simcoe County council in half, plus an appointed full-time Warden, is in municipal council hands where 9 out of 16 must "consent" before triggering the final step which requires all the consenting municipalities to represent a majority of all electors in the upper-tier municipality. Failure at any level kills the motion.

If approved, the new council composition would be ready for the 2026 municipal elections and include the mayors of the 16 municipalities. A full-time Warden would be appointed from outside for a four-year term, and only vote on recorded or tie-breakers.

The consent bylaw from Simcoe County is included on tonight's New Tecumseth council agenda. It's expected to receive support.
