2025 OPP contract price tag saves Town about $280k after savings

Posted March 11, 2025

As the dust settles on a four year deal between New Tecumseth and Nottawasaga OPP (Ontario Solicitor General) initially proposed as a near 25 per cent increase in 2025 contract costs, a combination of 10 per cent subsidy from the province, and reduction in hiring plans, the Town will pocket $279,842 in savings from the approved budget amount.

The so called surplus, is a result of the approved $6.535 million in December  being reduced to $6.255 million. The difference is being tucked into the Rate Stabilization Fund, to offset future increases.

In October 2024, New Tecumseth and most Ontario municipalities policed by OPP received amended agreements reflecting changes to the 2025 billing statements due to a new collective agreement between the Ontario Provincial Police Association and the Provincial Government, ratified on July 18, 2024. Locally that meant a 2025 contract cost of $7.261 million, a $1.46 million increase.

Council asked the OPP to reduce its plans to hire three constables, which with the province's one-time grant brought the price down
