Town looks to bolster all-way stops with 'tiger tail' addition

Posted March 3, 2025

The latest action to come through New Tecumseth's traffic advisory committee involves consideration to add a "tiger tail" to all-way stop signs in school and community safety zones.

A "tiger tail" is a rectangular sign with alternating red and white stripes installed below an all-way stop sign intended  to make it more visible on approach.

"Residents have expressed concerns regarding non-compliance with all-way stop signs at various intersections in the Town, particularly near schools and community safety zones," according to the draft policy statement from the engineering department. "Staff's standard procedure for addressing stop sign compliance concerns is typically limited to the review and implementation of the intersection requirements outlined in the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) and Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (GDGCR). While not prescribed by the OTM and GDGCR, many municipalities have used tiger tail signs to improve all-way stop sign compliance. This policy will help Staff to improve the visibility and prominence of all- way stop signs through the use of tiger tail signs in accordance with the criteria outlined within this policy."

Most recently the advisory committee, which meets March 4 at 6 pm, virtually, shepherded through a pilot project designating several neighbourhood blocks in west end Alliston as 40 km/r zones.

"The need for tiger tail signs will be reviewed by Staff in accordance with this policy when concerns regarding stop sign non-compliance arise at all-way stop controlled intersections within school and community safety zones."
