Site preparations underway at Stevenson for new build as courting partnership slows for more study

Posted January 24, 2025

Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) hosted the photo opportunity component of a $14.5 million transfer from the provincial government yesterday, to finance a scheduled 10 months worth of site works including property grading, building retaining walls, a new parking lot and the construction of a new elevated helipad.

Melrose Paving Co. Ltd. was awarded the contract to complete the projects by November 30, 2025.

Site works are the leading edge of the half billion dollar hospital expansion which will wrap around the hospital’s current facility, tripling its size. Inpatient bed capacity will increase by 20 per cent; ER will triple in size and have its own separate entrance with enclosed Ambulance Bays. Laboratory space will be enhanced, surgical suites, inpatient rooms, diagnostic imaging, birthing suites and more.

Three contractors have been prequalified and will be invited to bid on the project later this spring: EllisDon Corporation; Ledcor Construction Limited; and Pomerleau Inc., winning bidder announced later this year.

On the operations side, Stevenson remains under control of a provincial supervisor, Eric Hanna, and interim CEO Barbara Steed. Both were scheduled to appear at Monday night's New Tecumseth council meeting to discuss "the concept of voluntary partnership/integration with a larger hospital," according to its deputation request form.

"SMH is in the process of engaging with the community ....  To ensure stakeholders are aligned, the hospital is delivering community presentations to receive feedback. There are several benefits of partnering with a larger hospital which would support SMH. These include: Improved access to specialty care for patients in a timely manner; Strengthening our health human resources; Preservation of current patient programs; and Access to additional clinical expertise."

Asked this morning in preview of the deputation what larger hospital was being targeted, and more specifically how a partnership would impact and implemented at SMH, Rachael Ogorek, SMH Communications Manager said they have cancelled their council appearance pending further due diligence.

"We are in the discovery phase in looking further into what a stronger partnership with another hospital could look like." said Ogorek. "This presentation was booked a while ago and we thought we would have more concrete info by now. We have deferred this to a later date. It’s too soon to say, (what larger hospital) really as we are still discovering that ourselves."
