Final ward boundary review favours six Ward system
Posted May 23, 2025
New Tecumseth council Monday night will be presented an outsider review of proposed ward boundary changes that eliminate two seats in a six ward system whose design would largely run from west to east boundaries of the municipality - strip ward design - deliniated by recognizable marker lines.
The current structure is eight wards, deputy mayor and mayor. The preferred option for change is six wards, deputy and mayor.
The review, carried out by Watson & Associates Economists Ltd beginning last August, proposes to split Alliston in two wards, utilizing Victoria Street as a dividing point. Ward 3 runs from the 10th Line north to the municipal boundary, including Treetops and Briar Hill communities. The 7th Line is used as a divider between Wards 4 and 5. Ward 4 contains all of Beeton and its surrounding area, up to the 10th Line. The 4th Line divides Wards 5 and 6, dividing Tottenham in a north-south fashion. (Map attached).
During phase 1 and 2 of public consultations 697 surveyds were completed by members of the public, several open houses held.
"Both those who responded to the survey and those who attended the in-person engagement sessions appreciated how this option utilized recognizable marker lines, a balanced population, and provided for a symmetrical division of the community," according to the report to council.
