Provincial race in Simcoe-Grey features most of 2022 slate

Posted January 30, 2025

The list of candidates for the Feb. 27 Ontario provincial elections won't be finalized until nominations close Feb. 13, but in Simcoe-Grey it's shaping into a rematch of the 2022 campaign, won by Brian Saunderson, PC.

Saunderson, the former Mayor of Collingwood, was the first since Jim Wilson in 1990 to win as a non-incumbent. Wilson held the PC seat when George McCague retired, and while technically an independent when he chose to not seek reelction in 2022, Wilson was forced out of the PC Party, November 2018, under cloud of alleged sexual misconduct.

This time Saunderson is the incumbent, albeit one of the shortest by time in office, as Premier Doug Ford called an early election when one wasn't scheduled until June 2026.

He'll be up against familiar opponents including Ted Crysler for the Ontario Liberal Party. Crysler, a Collingwood lawyer finished second in 2022. Allan Kuhn is running again for the Green Party . At this post still trying to confirm the NDP candidate, who in 2022 was Keith Nunn.

Prospective candidates wishing to file their nomination papers must do so in person at a local election office by bringing one piece of government-issued photo ID no later than 2 PM (Eastern Time) February 13, 2025. There is no candidate fee. However, once registered, there are financial rules on election spending.

Simcoe—Grey local election office is located 818 MOSLEY ST, WASAGA BEACH, 1-(833) 505-3411
