Simcoe Auto Mayors
continue momentum with
second regional meeting
Posted September 30, 2025
Press Release - NEW TECUMSETH, ON – The Simcoe Auto Mayors Association, founded by New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross, will convene its second meeting on October 1, to advance regional collaboration and advocacy for Simcoe’s auto sector.
The Simcoe Auto Mayors Association is a coalition of municipal leaders and industry partners dedicated to addressing the unique challenges and opportunities facing the automotive industry in Simcoe County. Distinct from the Ontario Auto Mayors group, this association focuses exclusively on regional priorities, including workforce stability, investment attraction, and policy reform.
The Simcoe Auto Mayors’ first meeting resulted in a joint letter to the federal government urging the inclusion of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles in the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. Their advocacy contributed to a major policy shift announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on September 5, delaying the ZEV mandate originally set for 2026. The delay allows for a 60-day review of its economic impact and feasibility, a move welcomed by industry leaders and the Simcoe Auto Mayors.
“This industry is not just an economic engine—it’s a source of skilled employment, innovation, and long-term prosperity for our communities,” said New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. “While we are proud of the resilience and adaptability of our local industries, we also recognize the need for a unified voice—one that speaks directly to the unique needs of Simcoe. This is just the beginning. With the expertise and dedication of our municipalities and industry partners, we are confident the future of auto manufacturing in Simcoe County will remain strong and competitive.”
The Simcoe Auto Mayors remain committed to future advocacy efforts to ensure Simcoe’s auto sector remains a priority in Canada’s industrial strategy. The October 1 meeting will feature updates from Honda of Canada Manufacturing and ZF Automotive of Midland. Discussions will focus on current issues faced by Simcoe County manufacturers and explore collaborative solutions to support the business community.
