Council vote affirms homestead as site for Banting rebuild

New Tecumseth council stuck at 5-3 last night in favour of declaring 25 acres on the south portion of the Banting Homestead property as surplus for the purpose of disposition to the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) to rebuild Banting Memorial High School.

2025 budget approved, crossing guard cuts reversed

New Tecumseth council rescinded planned cuts to 12 crossing guards at the last minute ahead of approving a 2025 budget that will hike the municipal share of taxes by 4.04 per cent. Reinstating the guards added $171,000 back into the budget, which bumped up the tax rate by .37 per cent.

Mother, child uninjured in Alliston fire

New Tecumseth emergency crews spent several hours yesterday afternoon fighting a house fire on Previn Court whose working alarms enabled a mother and her small child to evacuate without injuries.

New Tecumseth council is scheduled tonight to approve a 2025 budget package that will increase the municipal portion of property taxes 3.67 per cent on a home with an assessed value of $456,000. 

Abandoned administration centre worth more as vacant lot

New Tecumseth's white elephant, the former Town hall which has attracted no buyer interest, is estimated to cost $20k to $40k per year just to maintain the vacant building and would require approximately $5.3 million to refurbish for occupation, according to an update for council on Monday night's agenda.

Alliston raid yields drugs, weapons, three charged

A local drug trafficking investigation opened in the fall targetting downtown Alliston, culminated with a search warrant executed yesterday afternoon (Dec. 10) on Knight Street. It took place just before 1 pm, shortly after one of the suspects was arrested at gun point in Tottenham.
