Province unveils shortlist of companies to build new Stevenson Memorial Hospital

Posted May 2, 2025

The provincial government has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select the team that will build an expanded Stevenson Memorial Hospital, from a shortlist of three prequalified contractors.

A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process began in August 2024, based on criteria including construction expertise and financial capacity to undertake a project of this size and scope. The three companies selected are:

  • EllisDon Corporation (built the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre)

  • Ledcor Construction Limited

  • Pomerleau Inc.

Each is now expected to detail how they will deliver the project. Once submissions are received, Infrastructure Ontario and Stevenson Memorial Hospital will evaluate the proposals, select a preferred company and then negotiate a final contract. The successful company is expected to be announced in early 2026.

This project includes a new, two-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital and increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 per cent.

When completed, SMH will include:

  • A new and expanded emergency department that is triple in size, including a separate entrance and enclosed ambulance bays, facilitating faster and easier access to emergency care.

  • An updated and larger laboratory to increase capacity for testing and diagnostics, allowing the hospital to meet the needs of their increased number of patients.

  • A new, more modern pharmacy that can better meet the needs of patients.

  • New surgical suites that will more than double the surgical department in size, decreasing wait times for surgeries and procedures.

  • An enhanced birthing unit with new labour and delivery rooms and a family waiting area

  • A new elevated helipad to help transport patients requiring urgent, life-saving care faster

The project will also include more parking spots and new and refreshed green spaces.

“Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to getting shovels in the ground for Stevenson Memorial Hospital’s redevelopment," said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, "and is another way our government is expanding capacity, decreasing wait times, and ensuring that families in New Tecumseth can access the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”
