County councillors vote down size reduction, approve adding full-time Warden

Posted October 8, 2024

Simcoe County councillors voted against reducing their numbers from 32 to 16 plus a full-time Warden, in a recorded weighted vote this morning.

New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross, and Deputy Mayor Stephanie MacLellan were in support of the reduced composition, along with Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dolin. Essa and Adjala-Tosorontio members were opposed.

A follow-up motion to add a full-time Warden in addition to the 32 member council, was approved also in a recorded weighted vote. Norcross and MacLellan were opposed.

Because the vote was to increase the size of council to 33, it will trigger the triple majority: a majority of votes on Cty Council; a majority of the lower tier (9 out of 16); and the majority of lower tiers in favour representing a majority of all electors in Simcoe County. That means New Tecumseth, Bradford and Innisfil are key to any changes. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs would also have to sign off on the change.

Should all the approval levels be met, eligible electors could apply for the four-year position, with the successful applicant appointed by County council. Any changes would be required to be made in time for the 2026 municipal elections - as the mayors and deputy mayors are seated at the County.
