West end Alliston set for speed reduction zone trial run

Posted February 24, 2025

New Tecumseth councillors are expected tonight to approve a pilot project designating blocks of streets bounded by King, Young and Industrial Parkway as 40 km/h zones. The three outer rings will remain 50 km/h.

But rather than a report based on a one year period, Town staff recommeds revisiting the action "once sufficient traffic data has been collected by the OPP and/or the Town's contractor, and analyzed by Staff."

"Staff are aiming to obtain the traffic data and report back to Council as soon as possible," according to the report to council. "Reporting back to Council as soon as sufficient traffic data has been collected will allow the Traffic Advisory Committee to potentially move forward at an earlier time with proposing recommendations for the Town's Speed Limit Policy."

Five each of "Begins" and "Ends" signs will be installed at the key intersections at an esimated cost of $6,000 beginning over March or April.

"Following the installation of the signage, the OPP has noted that they plan on using Black Cat radar devices to collect traffic speed and volume data within the neighbourhood area to determine the effectiveness of the 40 km/h neighbourhood area speed limit pilot project."
