Construction underway on doubling size of ADHS animal shelter
Posted June 9, 2025
Construction started this morning on the Alliston & District Humane Society's (ADHS) Second Chances Shelter expansion, managed by Bertram’s Construction of Barrie, with a completion date expected by January 2026.
The project will double the size of the current facility on its north side.
The expanded shelter will feature:
-
A dedicated cat area;
-
Exam rooms and a new isolation unit;
-
A spacious exercise room;
-
Increased intake capacity;
-
Additional dog kennels;
-
A multi-purpose community room for education and outreach.
“This expansion is not just about space—it’s about saving more lives,” said Sherri Wilson, spokesperson for ADHS. “With more animals being surrendered, abandoned, or found lost, our shelter has outgrown its current footprint. We’re responding to an urgent need with hope, compassion, and determination.”
ADHS, a no-kill shelter, takes in hundreds of dogs, cats, rabbits, and small animals each year, many suffering medical, behavioral, or emotional challenges.
The new facility will also allow ADHS to revitalize its community programs, including humane education for children and families—programming that has been limited due to space constraints.
"ADHS is also offering Naming Opportunities for individuals, businesses, or families who wish to contribute to this historic effort. Sponsorships are available for rooms and key areas within the shelter."
