Province to control new bike lanes, hike speed limits
Posted October 15, 2024
When the provincial legislative session begins its fall sitting next week, the government has announced in advance intentions to restrict municipalities from adding new bike lanes if they remove lanes for vehicular traffic. Municipalities would need approval from the province.
These proposed changes are part of "a focus on tackling gridlock and getting drivers and commuters across Ontario out of traffic."
Ontario is also moving forward with plans to increase the speed limit to 110 km/h, on the remaining portions of all 400-series highways. The government is also developing a design standard to allow vehicles to travel safely at speeds higher than 120 km/h on new highways.
