OPP issue reminder for residents to 'familiarize themselves with the applicable laws'

Posted July 10, 2026

The proliferation of electronic bikes and scooters has prompted Nottawasaga OPP to remind riders about the rules for using micromobility and off-road vehicles in New Tecumseth.

They include

  • Human-powered scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, and bicycles are permitted on most sidewalks unless prohibited by Town by-laws. Cyclists must follow Ontario cycling laws, including mandatory helmet use for riders under 18. Bicycles are also permitted on roads, bike lanes, trails, and parks unless otherwise posted.

  • E-bikes are permitted on Town roads and bicycle lanes but are not allowed on sidewalks, multi-use trails, or parks. Riders must be at least 16 years old, wear an approved helmet, and comply with Ontario e-bike regulations.

  • E-scooters, low-speed vehicles, golf carts, urban mobility vehicles, electric skateboards, hoverboards, unicycles, and Segways are not permitted on Town streets, sidewalks, trails, or other municipal property.

  • Off-road vehicles, including dirt bikes (electric and gas-powered) and ATVs, must comply with Town by-laws and provincial regulations. Vehicles operated on Town roads must be registered, plated, and insured.

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the applicable laws to help ensure safe and legal use of these vehicles within the community.
