New Tecumseth sets tourism plans for Panama's training camp, limited on-site spectator opportunities

The Town of New Tecumseth is looking to capitalize on Panama's national soccer team decision to set up its base training camp at the Nottawasaga Resort in preparation for its second World Cup appearance,
As reported here last week, Panama selected the Resort for its proximity and all-in-one-location as it readies to play two of its four first round matches in Toronto.
A report to council on next Monday's agenda, suggests the designation gives the town an opportunity to attract visitors and promote local businesses across Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham, while complying with FIFA security, privacy and media rules.
The proposed plan includes a free, registration-based community training session, subject to FIFA approval, where up to 300 people could watch a team practice and take part in a limited interaction opportunity. A fully public event will not be permitted at the base camp.
Other initiatives include a digital visitor guide promoting dining, shopping, trails, parks and attractions, as well as community viewing parties, a “Love Local / Make it New Tec” campaign and a civic kick-off event at town hall in early June 2026.
The town also plans to work with Simcoe County on shared tourism messaging, itineraries and regional promotions aimed at encouraging day trips and overnight stays during the tournament.
Staff estimate costs at $50,500, with insurance expenses still to be confirmed. The report says the spending is expected to be covered through savings within existing departmental budgets.
Tourism Simcoe County has also committed $20,000 toward a joint tourism and international exposure partnership during Team Panama’s stay, including communications and visitor promotion.
