Norcross pulls bylaw, vows a return within 60 days
Posted June 15, 2026
New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross has pulled his intention to use his strong mayor powers to force a vote on approving a stalled Official Plan Amendment (OPA) 5, when council meets tonight.
Norcross, who reasoned New Tecumseth's guide to growth over the next three decades, was in the best interests to move forward, would have needed four votes, including his own, to approve it.
In a statement issued last Friday afternoon, Norcross said his bylaw "was an attempt to bring two sides together. However, no common ground has emerged."
"The reality is that growth is expected and mandated by the Province, and we need to be in control of the local planning decisions," he said. "Growth is needed to fund the facilities — including recreation spaces — and programs that our residents are demanding.
Staff presented a reasonable plan that balances growth across the entire municipality. I am rescinding the use of Strong Mayor Powers in this matter at this time, and it is my intention to bring OPA 5 forward for approval within the next 60 days."
