OPP charge youth rider and parent in July 2025 e-dirt bike collision

Posted February 17, 2026

A 13-year-old and his parent have been charged in connection to a collision that involved a pedestrian being struck by an electric dirt bike last summer in Tottenham.

On July 25, 2025, emergency crews were called to Pridham Place where a three-year-old sustained serious injuries from the bike, and required air-ambulance to Toronto.

The immediate investigation carried out by the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team determined the 13‑year‑old was operating an electric dirt bike, purchased by his parent who permitted the youth to operate it on the roadway.

This morning, OPP announced charges in the incident.

"Due to many factors found during the investigation, the parent was charged despite not operating a motor vehicle themselves at the time of the collision," Provincial Constable, C. Hietanen

Nottawasaga CEO/ Media Relations Officer, told Free Press Online.

"The electric dirt bike is also not considered an e-bike. There will be educational posts leading into spring and summer on the different classifications of these types of vehicles, but an e-bike is classified as a power assisted bicycle which requires working pedals and a maximum assisted speed of 32km/h. The motor vehicle involved is an electric dirt bike with capabilities exceeding that of an e-bike and is solely powered by an electric motor and is not intended for roadway use."

Electric dirt bikes are classified as motor vehicles under Ontario law. This means:

  • They cannot be operated on public roads unless they are properly plated, insured, and meet all required safety equipment standards.

  • Operators must hold the appropriate class of motorcycle licence.

  • These vehicles are intended for off‑road (if registered and insured) and private property use only, unless fully road‑legal.

As a result of the investigation, a 43-year-old of New Tecumseth has been charged with: Dangerous Operation causing bodily harm.

Additionally, a 13-year-old of New Tecumseth, has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with: Careless driving causing bodily harm; and Electric Dirt Bikes and Roadway Use.

"Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure youth riders use these vehicles safely and in compliance with all applicable laws."
