Posted January 30, 2026
The Ontario government and its agency Infrastructure Ontario (IO), has awarded a $174 million contract to Pomerleau Inc., for construction to begin on an expanded Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston.
The phase one work will include new and larger acute care areas, the construction of a new, three-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital, to approximately 147,100 square feet, and increasing inpatient bed capacity by 20 per cent. The complete redevelopment is expected to be done by late 2028.
Once Phase One of the hospital’s redevelopment is completed, the expanded hospital will provide patients and families with:
-
Space to accommodate nine new inpatient beds at the hospital, increasing the total number of beds from 38 to up to 47;
-
A new emergency department that is triple the size of the current department;
-
Expanded diagnostic and surgical services; and
-
A brand-new birthing suite.
“We look forward to working closely with Pomerleau Inc. as we build a new hospital facility for Stevenson and a new future, transforming health care for New Tecumseth and surrounding communities,” said Carmine Stumpo, Supervisor, SMH.
Once complete, the new hospital will include an Emergency Department triple the size of the current space, expanded medical/surgical inpatient unit with 100 per cent single-occupancy patient rooms, expanded Diagnostic Imaging suites with brand new equipment, including the addition of an MRI Suite – a first for SMH. A bright new Obstetrics Unit will also be included with family-friendly spaces, new state-of-the-art surgical suites and more.
“Today’s contractor announcement marks an exciting step forward for our community," said New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. "We’re pleased to see this project moving into its next phase, bringing us one step closer to a truly positive milestone for New Tecumseth.”
