Provincial government driven growth plan for New Tecumseth on in camera agenda tonight

Posted December 8, 2025

New Tecumseth council will meet in special session tonight, albeit, in camera, to hear an update on the provincial government's last spring takeover of the Town's growth plan.

Town hired consultants had spent a few years working on a growth plan that was to guide development in New Tecumseth for next 30 years, including expansion of urban settlement boundaries. A recommended package was approved last May, which the provincial government proceeded to halt its progress through the approvals process. Instead, last August, the government stepped in and put a call out "seeking input on the development of a comprehensive regional strategy to address expected population pressures, while exploring the delivery of housing and economic options in south Simcoe County."

The deadline to comment was September 26 and its believed the provincial government has put forward its own growth plan which New Tecumseth would have no choice but to accept and implement. And its believed a new plan includes development proposals that were not included in the Town's submission.

About three years ago, agroup, which collectively calls itself the Harvest Community - Mattamy, FLATO, Lakeview Homes, Solmar to name a few - made an unsuccessful pitch to New Tecumseth council to front-end approximately $400 million to finance infrastructure required to accommodate over 15,000 new housing units between Alliston and Beeton. The collective owns approximately 2,000 acres. But the Harvest group's lands were not included in the updated New Tecumseth plan.

"The province’s Provincial Land and Development Facilitator has been directed by the Minister to explore how additional lands may be considered for future growth and how through a public-private partnership a portion of the costs for the community’s water and wastewater infrastructure investments and broader community benefits could be funded."

It's believed the facilitator's priority has been the annexation plans between Barrie, Oro, and Springwater, which has been settled except for compensation to Oro and Springwater.
