Move to investigate means to protect remaining portion of Banting homestead land

Posted December 3, 2025

New Tecumseth council has directed Town staff to investigate options to secure protection of the remaining 82 acres of the Banting homestead property from future incursions.

Deputy Mayor Stephanie MacLellan made the motion on the heels of the Town's real estate transaction trading 25 acres of the 107 acres homestead to the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) for the relocation of a new Banting Memorial High School. In exchange the Town will receive the current high school property on Victoria Street, and the Gord Wright Field.

MacLellan said the entire property was originally designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, and now the rest of the property is "vulnerable to the whims of future Councils."

The call to action includes legal counsel investigate but not limited to:

  • Enhanced heritage designation under applicable legislation;

  • Conservation easements or land trusts;

  • Acquisition strategies or partnerships with heritage organizations;

  • Integration into municipal cultural and tourism planning.

A report would come back to Council with recommendations on "feasible measures to ensure the long-term preservation of this historically and culturally significant site for future generations."
